Why am I gaining weight?

I work out consistently every day. I run, I ride miles upon miles every weekend, I swim, I lift weights, I eat healthy and I'm not losing a pound. So why am I gaining weight?

Sound familiar? There are many variables that can play into this situation. It could be what you're eating, what you aren't eating, what you're drinking or not drinking. If you're a female it could be your hormones. It could be a thyroid issue, diabetes or as simple as changing up your workouts. Nonetheless, it's frustrating when you put out a lot of energy and effort to get nothing in return.

What's going on?

I had this very problem in my early 30's. Let me tell ya, I scratched my head so many times trying to figure out "what's going on", I think I've got a permanent mark on my head from it.

At that time I was in decent shape, consistently worked out, was eating fairly clean and felt great. Life was cruising along when all the sudden my clothes were gettin' a little snug. What's a little water weight, we all have it from time to time. Next thing I discover I'm in the dressing room with jeans that are a size up from where I was. I'm thinking it's gotta be the designer. You know the kind that makes jeans an entire size smaller than they actually are. No biggie, I buy them and move on. As the weeks and jeans passed by. I find myself back at the store. I try the same designer jeans on, only to find out I'm up yet another size. I try laying down on the on the floor, sucking in my gut and I still can't get into the size I was wearing. UGH! Calgon take me away!!! This can not be happening to me. That's it, time to buckle down, get serious and take control of this weight gain. I stared cutting things out of my diet, I worked out longer, ran farther and still kept gaining weight.

People we aren't talking about a couple pounds here, I gained 20 pounds in about 2 months!Frightening in deed. Somebody call the Doctor, something is clearly wrong!!

As it turns out I was suffering from hypothyroidism. A disease that affects every cell of the body, including your metabolism. Hypothyroidism is commonly found in women in their 30's. If it goes untreated you will begin to gain weight.

Relief is in sight, all I have to do is take a couple pills and I'm good. Not so fast, I was border line diabetic too. Oh god help me.

Don't get excited, we're not done yet... turns out I was eating too much pasta, bread and other delicious comfort foods which led to the high insulin levels. They said I had to go on a diet, WHAT? I eat healthy, I don't eat junk food, I don't get it.

I thought I was eating healthy because there wasn't a burger, fries or pizza crossing my plate. Think again people, that's not the only items that make us fat. SUGAR is the devil and it's in all those delicious starchy carbs we all love to consume.

I had 20 pounds to lose, how was that gonna happen? I had to change up my workouts, increase my cardio and eat more! You heard me, I had to eat more thru out the day. It's similar to a cow grazing in the field.

I ate 5-6 small meals per day, cut out the starchy carbs completely and switched over to fresh veggies and lean meats. I had to learn to put the fork down. BOOM the weight began to melt away!

So what was going on? Low thyroid, border line diabetic, no protein, lotta carbs, and very little veggies. I was only eating 2-3 meals per day and they were very Large portions.

If you find you're struggeling with your weight and are doing all the right things to get it down, it could mean something deeper is preventing you from losing the weight.

Until next time...

  1. Do you still have Hypothyroidism until now? I'm 27. I was diagnosed with this thyroid condition late last year. Prior to that, I had Hyperthyroidism. I also gained 20 pounds because of Hypothyroidism but when I was given a go-signal to go on a diet and to exercise after surgery, I promised I'd lose all those excess weight. I've lost 15 pounds now and still counting. I'm 5 pounds away.

It is more tough and more difficult to lose weight because of the thyroid condition, but the good thing is, something can be done. I'm at the gym almost everyday and I eat healthy too.Ü
