Weight-loss parties

My clients often talk about weekends being the toughest time to eat clean. They have family get together, parties, a weekend get away, wedding or other events where food choices can be somewhat of a challenge. There are chips, dip, pizza, cheese burgers, hot dogs, creamy sauces, cake, ice-cream, beer, wine, foo-foo drinks and more being served.

How on earth is a person able to maintain their clean eating lifestyle with all these temptations surrounding them?

Believe it or not there are a few items on these temptatious spreads that are okay to enjoy over a weekend. I allow 1-2 cheat meals per week for my clients. This gives them freedom to enjoy their weekend without having to say no to all the party invitations.

Next time you’re at an event with hi-gloss food that has a little extra grease on it, focus on your portions. It will help keep the calories and fat down to a more realistic number.

During the social hour when appetizers are in abundance, grab a small plate and put a few of the lower-fat items like white cheese slices and crackers on your plate. Think protein/complex carb combinations. Rather than standing around the table grazing over the high caloric treats, you'll be grazing off your small plate.

At dinner, start with a salad and a glass of water this will help fill you up. Whether you are at a serve yourself or sit down event always keep the meat portion the size of the palm of your hand and any side dishes should be no larger than the size of your fist.

If you’d like to have an alcoholic beverage, I’d recommend either a glass of red wine or a citron flavored vodka and club soda. These are lower calorie/sugar drink choices and will save you calories. Try to limit yourself to only 2 drinks.

And last but not least, enjoy yourself! You can still have a fabulous time at any event when you are eating clean.

Keep it clean, keep it portioned and have fun!

Until next time...
